Kilimanjaro Climb : Lemosho Route

The Lemosho Route is widely considered one of the most scenic and rewarding trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching the mountain from the western side, this route offers a longer and more gradual ascent, allowing for excellent acclimatization and a higher summit success rate.

Machame & Marangu Route

Machame Route – “The Whiskey Route”

The Machame Route is one of the most popular and scenic routes on Kilimanjaro. It approaches the mountain from the southwest and features diverse landscapes, from rainforest and moorland to alpine desert and glacial summit. Known for its steep and challenging climbs, it offers excellent acclimatization through the “climb high, sleep low” approach. Typically done in 6 or 7 days, it’s ideal for adventurous trekkers looking for a dramatic and varied trek.

Marangu Route – “The Coca-Cola Route”

The Marangu Route is the only trail that offers hut accommodations instead of tents, making it a popular choice for climbers seeking more comfort. It follows a direct path from the southeast and uses the same trail for ascent and descent, which makes it less scenic compared to other routes. Typically completed in 5 or 6 days, it is considered one of the easier trails but has a lower summit success rate due to the shorter acclimatization period.

Rongai & Shira Route

Rongai Route – The Northern Approach

The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. It is known for its gentler ascent, low traffic, and drier conditions, making it a great option during the rainy season. Although less scenic than the southern routes, it offers a quiet and remote experience with a gradual climb. It is typically done in 6 or 7 days, ending with a descent via the Marangu Route.

Shira Route – Scenic and Remote

The Shira Route begins at a higher elevation than most routes, starting with a drive to the Shira Gate on the western side of the mountain. It merges with the Lemosho Route after crossing the scenic Shira Plateau, offering sweeping views and fewer crowds. However, starting at a higher altitude can increase the risk of altitude sickness. Trekkers typically spend 7 or 8 days on this route, enjoying both solitude and excellent scenery.
